Check Your Indoor Humidity Instantly!

The right humidity level is really important during the heating season.

Relative humidity is an important factor for several reasons. It affects how comfortable we feel. If it's too dry, we can't seem to get warm no matter how high we set the thermostat. It can affect the ability of some folks to breathe. Humidity levels also affect the cost of heating because lower humidity levels require higher temperatures in order for us to feel comfortable.

Indoor humidity levels are also believed to be related to the frequency of colds and allergic reactions. And excessive humidity can result in unwanted mold growth along with damage and discoloration of window sills, walls, and other building components.

So for a number of different reasons people pay more attention to the indoor relative humidity levels during the heating season.

A lot of folks don't really know what relative humidity is. A simple but non-scientific explanation is that it is the amount of water vapor in the air.

A common method of measuring indoor humidity is to buy a little devise at your local hardware store to tell you what it is. These devices are designed to sit on a table or shelf and are about three inches square in size. They usually sell for less than $20.

My personal experience with these devices is that they are often inaccurate when compared to a commercial indoor air quality meter. The ones I tested were not off by a couple of percentage points. They were off by a lot!

This same device often includes a "comfort zone" which is supposed to indicate at what temperature and relative humidity you will feel comfortable. There is a quick, free, and accurate method to evaluate your indoor humidity. It won't give you the relative humidity in percent, but it will indicate if you have too much or too little humidity. Remember that mold loves excess humidity. Too little and you're going to be uncomfortable.

I have tested this method against the commercial indoor air quality meter I use and found it to be quite accurate in indicating when the humidity level is too high or too low.

So what is this method? It simply requires you to look for two things.

First, look at your windows. Moisture on your windows means the humidity is too high. We're not talking one or two drops. We're talking about enough moisture so it runs down the glass and forms little puddles on the window sill. When this happens, your humidity is too high! If you continue to maintain this high humidity level, you are encouraging mold growth by providing the perfect environment. It will happen.

You may discover water forming on the windows in one area of your house, but not in another. For example, your bathroom window has water frequently forming on the sill while other windows in the house remain dry. Too much humidity in your bathroom may be the result of not running the exhaust fan long enough after a bath or shower. The rest of the house is ok.

So now you know how to determine if there is too much humidity in your house. What about too little?

To determine if it's too dry, you look for another simple, yet accurate indicator. Static electricity. Do you get static electric shocks when you walk across the carpet and touch something metal? Is it impossible to comb your hair without having several strands stick straight out? Do you need a ton of hair spray? Does the cat's fur stick out when you pet him?

These are all signs that it's too dry in your house. You need more humidity.

Now that you know how easy it is to check, you never need to wonder about your indoor humidity level. You'll know almost instantly if it's too humid or too dry. You don't need to buy a thing, and the results are almost instantaneous and quite accurate!

Hydroponics - A Quick Guide to Starting an Indoor Hydroponic Garden


Interested in taking gardening to the next level? Welcome to the wonderful world of hydroponics. If you have ever bitten into a hydroponic tomato, you can't help but be curious as to how it's done. This article is a quick guide to getting you started in growing vigorous flowers and vegetables hydroponically.

The system.

There are four popular hydroponic systems:

·????? Water Culture Hydroponics.

This system consists of reservoir that hold the gardener's desired water plant solution. In the reservoir there are floating plants in planters, which the roots are consistently submerged.

·????? Drip and Ebb Flow system.

The ebb flow system is like the water culture but instead of the roots being submerged they are dripped on by a steady drip through a hose. This is the system we are going to focus on.

·????? Aeroponics

Aeroponics is a system that instead of using predominately water, uses a system that mist water in to an airtight enclosure. The roots are suspended in the air so the roots get high levels of oxygen. This helps the grow process immensely.

We are going to use a drip system, as it is easy to maintain. You will need a decent size tote that is plastic. Pick one that is black if possible because we don't want to let any light get into the bin, which could cause root rot. Make sure also that the bin has a lid that can stay on tight. Next you will need to go to a hydro store and purchase special net pots that have a mesh like bottom and sides. Also we will need a fish pump an air stone/pump and some tubing that fits the desired pump.

First we will cut holes in the top of the bin so that the net pots fit snug but no fall through. After that we will want to cut a hole in the side of the net pots so that the tubing fits through to get to the roots. Hook up and connect with connecters the tubes to the one pump. Hosing and connecters can be purchased at your local hardware store. After that, throw in the air stone in the bottom with the pump being outside of the bin. Fill the bin with 4-8 gallons of water depending on the size of your bin. Should be about 6 inches deep of water.

There are many different types of medians to fill the net pots with. Most are pretty much all the same but we are going to use hydroton as it seems to evenly disperse the water to the roots and is cheap. This also can really only be purchased online or at a gardening store.

Atmosphere

There are two ways of creating a good atmosphere. One you can buy plastic and create a room or two you can purchase online grow tents. These tents are perfect as they consist poles to hang lights and holes for installing ventilation.

Generally speaking you are going to want to keep the room at a consistent 65 to 75 degrees. This varies form plant to plant but for this guide we are just going to assume that you are growing tomato plants.? You need fresh air to blow in and fresh air to blow out. A fan is also needed to push the air around inside the tent. Humidity can also be an issue depending on where you live in the world. A dehumidifier maybe needed to be purchased depending on how your type of plant responds to humidity.

Lighting

To make your beautiful plants grow, you will need to pick up a HID light. These can range from 80 to 1200 watts. The more watts the bigger and better the plant will grow. Keep in mind that the higher the wattage means more heat. If you have the money for a 1000-watt light and need to maintain 75 degrees, you will want to hook up a fan to the light, as it was get the growing environment super hot. Keep the light 1-2ft away from the plant as this will burn or dry out the plant.

You are going to want to keep the light on for 18 hours and 6 off. This will save on power and still maintain enough light to keep the plants growing at an optimal level. If your plant flowers which tomato plants do, you will need to trigger the flower stage by setting a timer to 12 hours of light and 12 hours of darkness. In 3-7 days you will start seeing the flower/fruit start to develop. Be careful not to interrupt the plants with light when they light cycle is supposed to be dark as this will cause the plant to do bad things including reducing how big the flower/fruits are.

Feeding

Once your have your room all set up, you are going to want to feed your plants a specific formula of nutrients which suit your plants specific needs. I like to use a line of food called advance nutrients for tomato plants. These guys have it down like it's their job. Wait it is their job.? Anyways pick a line of nutrients that are ideal for your type of plant. Make sure to test your water for its PPM (parts per million) and PH. An Ideal PPM is anywhere from 1000 to 2000PPM and a PH of 6.5. A PPM meter and PH meter can be purchased at a hydroponic store or online. It is very important to keep an eye out for PPM and PH levels, as this is crucial in the deployment of your precious plants.

Indoor Bonsai Care For Beginners Or Experts


The first thing you should do is research to be sure that your plant is indeed an indoor plant. Many websites and eBay sellers sell trees with the tag line that it is an indoor tree when in fact it is not. A perfect example of this is the juniper. A juniper is an everyday garden (nursery) plant that is meant to be outdoors. This particular plant needs to be over-wintered and is in fact, truly not an indoor plant. You may be able to keep this plant indoors for short periods, but it will grow best... outdoors. If you bought a juniper and it died, do not fret since you can purchase another one almost anywhere for about $4.00 and put it in the pot your original juniper came in. Junipers are evergreens and your plant may have already died before you received it, it just had not turned completely brown yet.

TRUE INDOOR BONSAI CARE: Many tropical and sub-tropical plants are a year round pleasure indoors and require minimal care. There are still some basics that must be followed.

Watering - A little patience and understanding and you will come up with a routine for watering your particular plant. Remember that a large portion of figuring this out will depend on what soil your plant is potted in and the size of the pot. In nature a tree can search the ground for water, however in a pot they are limited. You cannot neglect watering. Dry air and lack of humidity in a home can increase its need for watering. Alternately, given good humidity can decrease slightly the amount of watering necessary. The best thing you can do is invest a few dollars in a water meter. Next best thing is to pot your tree in a soil that tells you when it needs water, such as Akadama which changes color as it dries out. If nothing else, do a finger test ( stick a finger into the soil at least 1/2 way into the soil to feel for dryness). If the soil feels dry 1/4 - 1/2 the way down into the pot, you should water it. You can even try an old trick of sticking in a wooden chop stick and pulling it out to see if the wood soaked up any moisture. Over watering can be just as bad as under watering, so only water when the plant is dry. Never set your bonsai pot in water, the soil will not dry out and the roots will rot and your plant will surely die. A humidity tray will keep your bonsai up out of the water, perched appropriately above the water. Even tropicals need to have their soil dry out some before watering again. Don't ignore the watering, but don't drown your bonsai either.

Lighting - Lighting is extremely important. Insufficient sunlight will result in weak foliage and eventually a sickly plant that will not survive. Most indoor bonsai prefer a temperature of about 72 degrees F. You should place them near a bright sunny window or use fluorescent lights or grow lights. Through out the warmer months these should also be given out-door vacations when possible. Fresh air is necessary for the plant to produce its own plant food. Be sure to acclimate your trees to any new surroundings, which means don't take your indoor plant and place it directly in the sunlight. You should acclimate the tree slowly, an hour the first day, 2 hours the second day, 3 the third day and so on. An abrupt change can cause your plant to go into shock and unprotected summer sun can burn tender leaves. Give your indoor plants as much fresh air as possible. Don't place your bonsai too close to a window where the sunlight is magnified through the glass and can burn leaves and branches.

Fertilizing - If your indoor plant does not need a dormancy period you should fertilize year round. You should lower the strength or lengthen the time in between fertilizing through fall and winter. Even though indoor bonsai may not go dormant, they will still need a "rest" period. This will help them to build up strength for the next year. Use a balanced fertilizer such as BonsaiPro weekly during the growing season and a slow release type 2-10-10 over the winter as directed.

Pruning - Pruning is just as important to an indoor bonsai as one that grows outdoors. This is the means by which we keep the plants to miniature size. Without trimming, a bonsai will quickly lose its shape and will lose the illusion of a miniature tree. Pruning will also refine branch structure and also thickens the trunk and forces branch growth where nature may not have if left unkept. Trimming of new growth should be done all year long.

Pest control - Even indoor bonsai can be attacked. You should keep a watchful eye out for pests. Ants can bring in aphids and deposit them on your indoor plants to farm. Bringing in new indoor plants which are harboring pests can allow them to travel to your bonsai. Keep checking your plants for any signs of pests and take care of them immediately if you see any. Check your plants well if you take them outside for fresh air and sunlight before you bring them back inside. Most pest can be removed easily and a quick spraying of water with a drop of dish liquid will be a worthwhile time investment.
