What Contributes to a Higher Yield?

After gaining experience and having a few successful grows, indoor gardeners then start wondering how to get bigger yields. There are different factors that contribute to larger crops and some are more important than others.

To begin, your plants' environment is of paramount importance. If you get this right and keep your plants healthy through their entire life-cycle, you'll do great.

First, is light. Simply put, the more you have, the bigger your yield. You can only take this so far before heat becomes a problem and your plants burn.

Second, aeration to the root zone - People know plants need water, but they forget oxygen is even more important. Supply the roots of your plants with as much oxygen as you can.

Third, carbon dioxide - If you add CO2 to your grow room, yields will improve.

Fourth, temperature - While your lights are on, you want to keep the temperature in the 68-78 degree range. If you can, drop the temperature considerably while the lights are off. You don't want to make them too cold, but going down 15 degrees is good.

Fifth, Humidity - During the growing stage, humidity can be higher (45%-65%). However, to avoid mold, you'll want to keep the humidity low (45%-50%) during the flowering stage.

Sixth - Nutrients - Although they're important, they aren't as important as everything above them on this list. The most common mistake is overfeeding. Get a good TDS meter and make sure you aren't giving your plants too much food. Also, keep it simple. Despite what the flashy labels promise, there isn't a holy grail of nutrients out there that will grow you monster plants.

If you get everything on this list dialed in, you'll be quite happy with your results. However, there's more to gardening than big crops. Taste and appearance are also important. Once your environment is perfect, work on quality.
