The History of Bhopal

Bhopal is said to be founded by Bhoj, a king of Parmara. It is found in Dhar, having its own capital. It was originally known as "Bhojpal" after King Bhoj because he was responsible for the construction and forming of Bhopal's surrounding lakes.

When the Parmaras lost its power, the city was destroyed several times. After a few years, the city faded away. Dost Mohammad Khan who is an Afgan soldier of the tribe of Orakzai was the one who laid out the city on the same area after the death of Aurangzeb, the emperor of Mughal in 1707. He brought the Islamic influence on the architecture and culture of Bhopal.

Bhopal, later on, became known as the second largest state in the pre-independence of India with a Muslim religion. It was also ruled by four of the Begums from the year 1819 up to 1926.

The first female ruler of Bhopal is Qudisa Begum who was succeeded by Sikandar, her only daughter. The last female ruler was Kaikhusrau Jahan Begum who stepped down to her son's ruling. Some of the monuments that serve as a reminder of the Bhopal's history during its glorious period still stand in the city.

Geography

The City of Bhopal is wonderfully placed among the richest and most fertile land. The city of Bhopal has an average elevation of 499 meters of 1,637 feet. It is located in India's central part and is north above the mountain ranges of Vindhya.

Bhopal has an uneven elevation and within its boundaries are presences of small hills. The major hills in Bhopal are composed of the Shyamala hills located in the northern region, Idgah hills and the Arera hills located in the central region.

The whole municipality is noted to cover 286 square kilometers. It also has two magnificent lakes which are known collectively as the Bhoj Wetlands. It is composed of the Lower Lake and Upper Lake which was built by King Bhoj. These lakes are known locally as the Chota Talab and the Bada Talab respectively.

Bhopal's Climate

The city of Bhopal has a humid subtropical climate and has a mild dry winter, humid monsoon season and a hot summer. The summer season starts late March up to mid June with an average temperature of thirty degrees Celsius or eighty six degrees Fahrenheit and it can even exceed forty degrees Celsius or one hundred four degrees Fahrenheit. It is in late June when the monsoon starts and ends in late September. The said months receive about 40 inches or 1,020 millimeters of precipitation.
