Humidifiers and What to Look For

There are many different humidifier models to choose from and it is important to know what to look for when trying to decide on a unit that will fit your personal needs. Besides knowing the size of the unit to get and what type of humidifier filter it uses, there are other functions that are nice to have. While some of these may not be essential it probably will improve the user experience for most people.

The first thing to consider is the ease of use. How user friendly the humidifier is designed to be really matter especially when it is your first unit and the time comes around to replace the filter. Being easy to disassemble is important for quick cleaning and filter changing. Also, it is nice to have a large water tank so that it requires refills much less frequently.

Noise is always a factor with many of these appliances and new models today are becoming much better at noise control. Most good brands are relatively quiet and that can be important for someone who is bothered by too much background noise, or intends on using the unit at night. Typically, warm mist units are quieter than cool mist humidifiers.

A nice feature to have is the low water indicator lights or beeps. Some way of notifying the owner when the water tank is low on water is important because it can waste a lot of energy running on empty. An even better function is auto shut off whenever the water levels get too low.

Auto shut off can also apply to units that come with a humidity meter. This allows the user to set a target humidity level at which point the unit shuts off to avoid over humidification. Just as too little moisture can cause problems, over humidification can promote mold growth, dust mites, and mildew.

There are many other features that come with some humidifiers such as air purification and sterilization. However, all units use a humidifier filter which filters the air flowing through the unit. Remember the most important part of a humidifier is the replacement humidifier filters which needs to be changed regularly.
